In 2008, Matt was training a group of high school football players, and their mothers wanted him to create a workout program specifically designed for them, with the goals of fat loss and lean muscle development being the focal point of the program. The Metabolic Meltdown was born, and operated out of Matt’s gym in Menands, NY, Phelps Gym. From 2008-2012, Matt trained hundreds of athletes, and did not spend much of his time developing Metabolic Meltdown. As such, the program only had 90 members in the fall of 2013.
WHAT IS METABOLIC MELTDOWN?
In 2008, Matt was training a group of high school football players, and their mothers wanted him to create a workout program specifically designed for them, and their goals to burn fat and build muscle. Matt rented out additional space in his personal training studio, and in a 1000 square foot room that formerly served as a diner, Metabolic Meltdown was born.
From 2008-2012, Matt trained hundreds of athletes, and did all of the operations of his training business on his own. Consequently, he was not afforded a lot of time to build Metabolic Meltdown. As such, the program only had 90 members in the fall of 2013.
Realizing the potential of this amazing full body workout program, Matt decided he would teach almost all of the classes on his own in an effort to improve the intensity of the workout, the quality of instruction, and customer satisfaction. At this time, Matt also hired his sister, Kirstie Harris, to come on board as the business manager, and handle all accounting, billing, and collecting. In 2012, Lynsey Ciraulo became the first additional trainer hired to help run the program, helping Matt teach the early morning classes.
Within 3 months, the program gained 30 members, added several new class times and was on its way to becoming the authority on how to burn fat and gain muscle. During the winter months of 2013-2014, one of Matt’s athletes, Drew Smith, was training at the facility in preparation for the upcoming CFL (Canadian Football League) season. A former collegiate football star at the University at Albany, Drew was a charismatic, physically fit, intelligent young man, who seemed lost and confused about the path that his life would take. Matt took the time to have several “heart to heart” conversations with Drew, and together, they came to the conclusion that Drew no longer had the passion to play professional football. By this time, Matt was finally starting to realize the potential of Metabolic Meltdown, and offered Drew the opportunity to come on board, and become his full time assistant. Drew accepted the offer, and with the momentum that had been generated, the program swelled to 150 members by the Spring of 2014.
A critical piece of Metabolic Meltdown is Matt’s wife, Cara. Taking a leap of faith, she left the education field in 2013, in order to help Matt realize his dream, and turn Metabolic Meltdown into everything they both knew it could become; the best full body workout around where people can come together to burn fat and build muscle.
Over the next several months, Matt ratcheted up his effort to make the program unique, giving different templates different “names”, and always implementing new, challenging movements to the mix. As the program hit the 180 client mark in the fall of 2014, Matt became more and more impressed with the physical changes that his female clients were making. At this same point in time, Matt was also becoming bored with his own “traditional” lifting program, and decided to join Drew as participants in class for “a couple of weeks” to burn fat and build muscle. 18 Months later, they haven’t stopped. Nearing 300 clients by March of 2015, Metabolic Meltdown was running out of space in both of the 1000 square foot rooms that it operated out of and soon after they found their dream “home base”. In June of 2015, Metabolic Meltdown relocated, transferring 270 members to Green Island.
